STORAGE TIPS
Getting Ready To Move?
It's always a good idea to have your belongings packed a day or two prior to moving them into storage. This can help you separate old, unwanted items from the items you wish to keep, and it will save you time on the move itself. It may also be a good idea to number the boxes and keep a list of what is in them in case you have to come back to get a single item out of storage.
These are some items that might help you get a good start:
- Sturdy boxes
- Packing paper or bubble wrap
- Cotton gloves
- Zip ties
- Packing tape w/ tape gun
- Moving blankets or furniture covers
- Markers to label the boxes
- A notepad to keep track of what is in the boxes

Packing Your Home or Business Into a Unit
- Always be sure to have the manager show you your unit before making any decisions. This is to ensure that you have the proper size before any paperwork is signed.
- Be sure to utilize the full space of your unit. Blankets can be placed on furniture in order to stack. Goods can be placed underneath a table.
- Heavy items are best packed in small boxes.
- Do not place angular, heavy things on top of furniture.
- Place heaviest items on ground, then stack lighter objects on top.
- Items that you may come back for often should be placed in the front of the unit and less used items toward the back.
- Boxes are the best way to keep your goods organized and safe from breakage.
Furniture
- When stacking furniture, placing blankets or towels between pieces can keep them from getting scratched.
- Furniture can be manipulated to make all kinds of room. Some items can also be broken down for a variety of benefits. Legs can be taken off of tables and chairs to get them through doorways easier whether it is your home or your unit. Bed rails can be taken apart to minimize space consumed. Couches can be stood on end to gain floor space. Be sure to use zip-lock bags to store small parts such as screws, nuts, bolts, and boxes for bigger things like couch legs. Bed rails should be labeled for size, zip-tied, and stored in a corner or a lower area to keep them from falling.
- Drawers can also be filled in place of boxes.
- All expensive or irreplaceable furniture should be covered.
Lamps
- Lamp bases should be securely padded. Smaller lamp bases should be padded and placed in a box to prevent breakage.
- Newspaper should not be used on lampshades or anything that is not a hard surface. This is due to the transference of ink.
Mirrors and Pictures
- Needless to say, these item can break easily and should never be stored FLAT. This leaves a bigger area for an item to hit should it fall from above.
- Small pictures should be wrap, and placed on end.
- Large pictures should be wrapped well, and placed on end. Seagrove Beach Self Storage sells moving supplies as well, so it's possible that the manager may be able to order some special boxes for large pictures, with a few days notice of course.
Electronics
- Seagrove Beach Self Storage can sell you boxes that can accommodate these items, but the safest box for these items is the original box that it came in. But if you haven't saved the original, plenty of bubble wrap or packing paper can compensate just fine.
Dishes
- The safest thing to do in regards to dishes and glassware is to buy boxes that are specifically made for these items.
- You'll want to keep your fragile dishes pack under 30 pounds to keep them from being dropped or damaged during the ride.
- All items should be individually wrapped. Packing material of some kind should also be placed in all gaps to prevent shifting.
- Heavy items should never be placed on top of glassware.
Clothing and Other Fabrics
- Wardrobe boxes are something that most places offer with their moving supplies. This is the best way to store clothes because it keeps them hung up on a rack inside the box if you need an outfit in a hurry.
Pots and Pans
- Plastic bags are essential for storing forks, knives, spoons, and other drawer items.
- Pots, pans, and bowls should be stored with padding in between each item.
Appliances
- Appliances should be cleaned out thoroughly before storing.
- Door should be taped shut while moving to prevent injury.
- Refrigerators should be thoroughly dried out to prevent mold and the doors left slightly open. If a refrigerator is placed on it's side, you should wait 24 hours before plugging it back into the wall.
- Remember, once these appliances are thoroughly cleaned, the inside compartments can also be used for more storage space.
Documents and Records
- Important documents should be placed in a plastic bag.
- Books should be packed flat inside a small box to protect the spines.
- Records should be placed on edge in a small box.
Seasonal Decorations
- Once again, original packaging is the best for these items. However if you do not have them, ornaments should be padded well before being placed in a box. The more delicate the ornament is, the smaller the box should be.
- Strings of lights can get tangled very easily, so be sure to wrap the lights around something like a piece of cardboard, then wrap with packing paper afterwards.
